Wood Fences
Wood fencing is a timeless choice for protecting both your property and your loved ones, as well as adding beauty to your property. Known for its versatility, wood fencing can be tailored to various styles, from classic picket designs to solid privacy panels. At Good News Fence Co., we are dedicated to delivering both high-end custom fence jobs as well as lower-priced economy jobs to meet your fencing needs.
Board on Board – Privacy Fence
A privacy wooden fence usually refers to a board-on-board style fence. This provides the highest level of privacy for your property, as the pickets overlap each other closing the gaps between them. This type of fence can utilize vertical or horizontally aligned boards (pickets). Privacy (board-on-board) fences use more wood than side-by-side fences and costs $4-5 more per linear foot typically.
Side-by-Side Fence
The Side-By-Side fence style is a popular choice for homeowners seeking a blend of privacy and simplicity at a lower price than a Board On Board fence style. This design features vertical or horizontal boards installed edge-to-edge, creating a barrier that offers security and beauty to your property. The pickets do not overlap, however, making this option less private than a board-on-board fence. Its straightforward construction offers a clean, uniform look and ensures stability and durability at a lower price than the board-on-board style. This style will cost you $4-$5 per linear foot less than a Board on Board style.
Factors to Consider When Choosing
Your New Wood Fence
There are many factors to consider when choosing the right new wooden fence for your property. At Good News Fence Co., our goal is to help you make an informed decision by providing you with the necessary pricing information, along with details regarding additional add-on items. Here is a list of questions to consider to help you choose the best new wooden fence for your project.
How tall do you want your fence to be?
Most residential fences are either 6 ft. or 8 ft. tall. Typically, our 8 ft. wooden fences cost approximately 30-40% more than our 6 ft. wooden fences. Due to the height of an 8 ft fence, the posts need to be 6 ft apart to provide enough stability for the taller fence, instead of 8ft apart for a 6 ft tall fence. So you need more posts for an 8 ft fence, than a 6 ft fence.
What type of wood would you like to use?
We offer a variety of different wood choices, including Western Red Cedar, Japanese Cedar, Douglas Fir, and Treated Pine. Western Red Cedar is typically the best quality and highest priced, with a Japanese Cedar fence running $6/linear foot less than Western Red Cedar and Treated Pine coming in as the least expensive and lowest quality option, as it tends to warp more often than Cedar. A treated (unstained) pine fence will cost approximately $15-$20 less per linear foot than a pre-stained Western Red Cedar fence. Douglas Fir is a step above pine and step below cedar regarding quality and price.
How wide do you want your pickets?
Our pickets come in a variety of sizes, including 3.5 inches, 4 inches, 5.5 inches, and 6 inches. We also offer various styles, including flat top and dog-eared pickets
Do you want the wood to be pre-stained?
Although pre-stained wood costs slightly more than raw wood, it is less expensive than it would be to pay someone to stain the entire fence after it has been completed. But if you want to stain it yourself, then having a raw wood fence installed could be the best option. Staining will preserve the life of your fence and therefore protect the investment, to avoid pre-mature replacement.
Do you want a kickboard?
While a kickboard adds $4.50/foot to a fence job, it can be a great investment to prolong the life of your fence. Its purpose is to close the gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground, which in turn protects the fence and keeps unwanted critters out. Our kickboards are made with treated pine, which is meant to be in contact with the ground and will not rot for many years.
Do you want a top cap?
A top cap is a 2-inch thick, 6 or 8-inch wide piece of wood that is attached to the top of a fence. Top Caps are primarily decorative but can also provide some added protection to the fence from weather. Adding a top cap increases the project’s total cost by $6-9/foot, depending on the width and material used.
Do you want trim or molding?
This is purely decorative to give you the look you want and is usually a 1×4 inch piece of wood that runs along the top of the fence. You have the option to add just one piece of molding or a second piece, which can help to give the fence an added sense of dimension and depth. Each piece of molding typically costs around $1.65/foot.
Fence Pricing Factors
There are many different contributing factors when it comes to determining the overall price of a wooden fence. Material type plays a significant role, along with fence design and height. The size of the area to be fenced and the terrain (sloped or flat) and soil type (easy to dig, or difficult rock/clay) can affect installation complexity and pricing.
Additionally, factors such as distance to the job site, permit fees, and the need for gate installation or custom features contribute to the overall expense. Properly assessing these elements ensures a realistic budget and helps you select the best wooden fence for your needs.
